What is a Conservation Covenant ?

A Conservation Covenant is a private, legally-binding agreement between a landowner and a Responsible Body.  Once agreed, the obligations remain with the land and are enforceable for the duration of the agreement.

It is used to secure:

  • Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) delivery
  • Ecosystem service outcomes
  • Long-term land management commitments

Key features of a Conservation Covenants ?

  • Operates independently of planning permission and suitable for multi-developer or landscape-scale schemes

  • Independent of local planning authority processes and available in areas where the LPA are currently not offering S106s.
  • Can support multi-developer schemes across boundaries
