Client
Landowners and farmers as part of the Upper Beult Farmer Cluster in the Low Weald, facilitated by Kent Wildlife Trust. The project is funded by Southern Water.
The challenge
Most of Britain's breeding Nightingales are now confined to south-east England, and Kent is the stronghold for this iconic species. The Low Weald is a particularly important area, recognised as a county conservation priority in the Kent Nature Partnership Biodiversity Strategy. To protect and grow the population, we needed a detailed understanding of where Nightingale territories currently exist and where habitat could be created or improved to connect them.
What we did
We surveyed the Upper Beult farmer cluster area during the Nightingale breeding season (late April–May), when singing males are recorded first thing in the morning, starting before dawn. Using a bespoke app, we mapped every territory in the study area and identified opportunities for habitat restoration to connect existing clusters of birds to the best surrounding habitat. We also trialled the integration of sound recordings for future sonogram analysis, and worked closely with South East Rivers Trust to ensure habitat restoration for Nightingales could also support natural flood management and water quality.
The outcome achieved
The survey produced a detailed map of Nightingale territories across the Upper Beult farmer cluster, giving farmers and landowners a clear, evidence-based picture of the species' habitat requirements to guide land management decisions. The project has also laid the groundwork for long-term citizen science monitoring of singing male Nightingales in the area, and ongoing work with project partners is examining how Nightingales and other priority species respond to different habitat management approaches.
