Site description

Shalmsford Street sits to the north of Shalmford Street village and to the west of Chartham and is approximately 5 miles southwest of Canterbury city.

The entirety of the site is included within the Great Stour, Ashford to Fordwich Local Wildlife Site (LWS), designated for its ornithological importance and assemblage of good invertebrate fauna.

To the north, west and east of the site are areas of grassland, and to the south is a large water body. The wider area is made up of areas of residential and industrial areas dominated by arable fields.

At present, the site comprises other neutral grassland, mixed scrub, ponds (non-priority) and scattered trees.

Recommendations are for the condition of all habitats to be increased by one level. This can be achieved through grazing, felling, pruning, planting. The scattered tress on site will be retained.

These BNG units are based on a desktop exercise. A full site survey would need to be undertaken to determine the current habitats on site to validate the current units/uplift.
