Site description

Headcorn Habitat Bank is approximately 8 ha and lies to the north of Lenham Road, approximately 1.7 km to the northeast of the village of Headcorn.

The surrounding landscape is a mix of arable and grassland fields bounded by hedgerows and blocks of woodland. Small blocks of woodland adjoin the site on the western and southwestern boundaries.

The site previously consisted of modified grassland and other neutral grassland and is currently in the process of being transformed into lowland meadow and other neutral grassland.

Management and enhancement measures are already underway within the site.

Grassland enhancement measures were initiated in autumn 2022 with ground preparation and wildflower seeding across all three fields. Cutting management (outside of the flowering season) has been introduced across all three fields and is ongoing annually, with all arisings removed after each cut. Between mid-February and the beginning of March 2023, a flock of sheep was brought onto the site to graze the fields. The combination of cutting and grazing will continue to be adopted to support the enhancement of the habitat.

Hedgerows on site will be retained.
